A material documented distinction of superwhisper is choice: local or cloud speech models, local or cloud language models, built-in and custom modes, context controls and several activation methods. If those controls are why you use it, a simpler alternative may be a downgrade. If you instead want a Mac workflow organised around per-app behaviour or one product across desktop and mobile, this shortlist is useful.
Clavio publishes this comparison. We explicitly preserve a material advantage of superwhisper — its documented local-model path — and do not claim Clavio matches it.

superwhisper and three practical alternatives
| Option | Processing choice | Activation model | Customisation model | Published price basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| superwhisper | Local and cloud speech models; local language models are documented on macOS. | Toggle, push-to-talk, mode shortcut and supported mouse buttons. | Built-in modes, custom modes, model choice, context controls and auto-activation rules. | Free tier; Pro listed at $8.49/month, $84.99/year or $249.99 lifetime. |
| Clavio | Cloud transcription and optional cloud polishing; wake recognition and the personal voice profile remain on-device. | Hold key, trackpad gesture, wake phrase or always-on. | Per-app profiles for trigger, polish, style, translation and post-paste action. | Free 3,000 words/month; the pricing page displays $15/month and says billing is £12 GBP, with the exact total at checkout. |
| Wispr Flow | Cloud service with model-improvement, cloud-storage and local-storage controls. | Hold shortcut or double-press hands-free recording on desktop. | Styles, learned vocabulary, snippets, Command Mode and team controls, with platform-specific availability. | Free weekly allowance; Pro listed at $15/user monthly or $12/user monthly billed annually. |
| Apple Dictation | May process general dictation on-device depending on language and settings; Apple tells users where to verify. | System microphone key, shortcut or menu command. | macOS Dictation and Voice Control settings rather than AI modes or per-app profiles. | Included with macOS. |
When you should not switch from superwhisper
If your policy requires audio and post-processing to remain on the Mac, superwhisper already documents the necessary building blocks: local voice models and local language models on macOS. Clavio does not make that claim; its dictation audio is processed through a cloud backend. A wake phrase is not a substitute for a local data path.
Likewise, if you actively compare transcription models, bring API keys or maintain custom prompts with selected-text and clipboard context, superwhisper's complexity is doing useful work. Do not switch merely because another interface looks cleaner.
When Clavio is the relevant alternative
Clavio moves the organising unit from “mode and model” to “the app in front of me.” For each app, you can decide the listen mode, wake phrase, polish level, writing style, translation target and post-paste action. That is helpful when your goal is not to tune a model but to make Mail, Cursor and chat behave differently without switching profiles by hand.
Clavio's wake-word and always-on paths are gated by an on-device personal voice profile. It is designed to reduce accidental activations from other people in the room. It is not a biometric login and should not authorise sensitive actions.
What Wispr Flow covers
Wispr Flow's documented scope includes Mac, Windows, iOS and Android dictation, meeting notes and team administration. Those facts matter when platform coverage, rather than model configuration, defines the requirement.
That breadth is materially different from both a Mac-first voice keyboard and a local-model toolbox. Compare the features on the specific platform you use, because Flow's own plan documentation notes that some controls vary between desktop, iOS and Android.
Switch without losing a working setup
Keep superwhisper installed while you run the replacement for a week. Write down the modes, prompts, vocabulary and shortcuts you actually use; migrate only those. Test long recordings and technical vocabulary before changing any subscription.
If privacy is the reason for moving, draw the data path for both speech recognition and language-model rewriting. “Local transcription” can still be followed by cloud rewriting, while a cloud-first product can keep a separate voice profile local. The two stages must be evaluated independently.
- Export or copy only configuration and vocabulary you own.
- Disable auto-send during the comparison so output remains reviewable.
- Compare monthly checkout totals in the same currency and include tax.
- Delete old local history only after the new workflow is verified and backed up where appropriate.
Try the app-profile approach before you switch
Clavio is free to test on Apple-Silicon Macs with macOS 14.2 or later. If the wake phrase and per-app rules do not improve your real workflow, superwhisper's local and model-level control may remain the better fit.

Questions before choosing a superwhisper alternative
Does Clavio work fully offline like a local superwhisper setup?
No. Clavio sends dictation audio to its backend for transcription and optional polishing. Its wake-word recognition and personal voice profile are local, but that does not make the full dictation pipeline offline.
Why choose Clavio instead?
Choose it for a different workflow: wake phrase or always-on activation, a trackpad gesture, and app profiles that change listen mode, polish, style, translation and post-paste action. Those features matter only if you want the Mac to behave differently in each app.
Is superwhisper cheaper?
Its public monthly number was lower on 4 September 2026, but that is not a like-for-like price claim: currencies, taxes and plan structures differ. superwhisper listed $8.49/month; Clavio's page displayed $15/month and said billing was £12 GBP. Compare final tax-inclusive checkout totals and the features you will actually use.
Which one is better for confidential work?
A fully local superwhisper configuration offers the clearest documented path when content must not leave the Mac. Cloud configurations have different data paths. For regulated work, verify the exact settings, contracts and organisational requirements with your security or legal team.
